About Community Schools

CEDA’s Community School Program is based at Hugh John Macdonald School, a designated Community School located in the Winnipeg School Division.

Our Community Development Organizer works with school administration, teachers, school staff members, students, parents, and the broader community to identify community challenges facing students and families. Together, they develop and carry out a strategic plan to tackle some specific issues that are barriers to the students’ learning success.

It takes a village…

Community Involvement

With this strong community network and leadership, our Community Development Organizer develops and runs programs and projects that address the identified needs of the community at Hugh John Macdonald School including:

  • Rainbow Community Gardens, a network of community gardens created in partnership with University of Manitoba for newcomer families in Winnipeg, Landmark, and Niverville
  • CEDA Pathways Post-Secondary Transition Project, created in partnership with CEDA Pathways to Education that provides support to newcomer CEDA Pathways to Education graduates for successful transition to post-secondary education.
  • Youth mentorship projects to foster young community leaders in the area of:
    • food security and food production
    • bike building and repair
    • gardening
    • student exchanges with First Nations communities
